Your Civic 1.5T's clutch pedal feels spongy and soft instead of firm and responsive? The factory rubber clutch line is flexing under pressure. Part number varies by supplier, but this is the Clutch Masters stainless steel braided clutch line for 2017-2021 Civic 1.5T models. The rubber factory line expands when you press the clutch pedal, especially after it's gotten old and soft. That expansion eats up pedal pressure and makes the clutch feel vague. Stainless steel braided line doesn't flex. When you push the pedal, all that pressure goes straight to the clutch slave cylinder. You get a firmer pedal with a more defined engagement point.

Here's Why Rubber Lines Feel Spongy

The factory clutch line is rubber with fabric reinforcement. When you press the clutch pedal, hydraulic pressure builds up in the line. Rubber flexes and expands under that pressure. New rubber lines aren't too bad, but after a few years the rubber gets soft from heat cycling and brake fluid exposure. Old rubber expands even more. That expansion makes the pedal feel soft and spongy. You're pushing the pedal and some of that travel is just flexing the line instead of moving the clutch. Stainless steel braided lines have a steel mesh wrapped around the inner Teflon hose. The steel doesn't flex. All your pedal pressure goes to actuating the clutch, not expanding the line.

Direct Replacement for Factory Line

This line replaces the rubber section of your clutch hydraulic system. The Civic 1.5T has hard metal lines from the master cylinder and to the slave cylinder. There's one rubber section in the middle that flexes with suspension movement. That's what this stainless line replaces. It connects to the factory hard lines with the same fittings. You're not cutting or flaring lines. Unbolt the old rubber line, bolt the new stainless line in, bleed the clutch system, done. Takes maybe an hour if you're going slow.

You Need to Bleed the System After Installation

When you disconnect the clutch line, air gets in the system. After you've installed the stainless line, you need to bleed the clutch hydraulics to get the air out. If you don't bleed it, the pedal feels terrible and the clutch won't disengage properly. Bleeding's not hard. You need a helper to pump the pedal while you crack the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder, or you can use a vacuum bleeder if you've got one. Keep pumping fluid through until there's no air bubbles. Make sure the master cylinder doesn't run dry while you're bleeding or you're starting over.

Note: After you install this line, you must bleed the clutch system. Air in the hydraulics makes the pedal feel spongy and the clutch won't work right. Use fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid when bleeding. Don't reuse old fluid and don't let the master cylinder run dry during the bleed process. If you run it dry, you're introducing more air and you're starting over. The pedal feel change is immediate once the system's bled properly. It should feel noticeably firmer with a more defined bite point. If the pedal still feels spongy after bleeding, you've got air still in the system or there's a leak somewhere. Check all the fittings and bleed it again.
