If it's dark gray or black and packed with dirt, replace it. Don't try to blow it out with compressed air or clean it. Paper air filters don't clean well and you're just wasting time. A fresh filter costs like twenty bucks. Just replace it. If you're getting your oil changed regularly, ask them to check the air filter while they're under the hood. Most quick lube places will show you the filter if it's dirty. Don't let them upsell you on overpriced filters though. Order the OEM filter yourself and install it. Takes five minutes.

OEM vs Aftermarket Filters

You can get aftermarket air filters for cheaper than OEM. Some of them work fine. Others flow poorly, don't filter as well, or don't fit right in the airbox. The OEM Honda filter is designed specifically for the 1.5T Accord's airflow requirements. It filters out the dirt your engine needs to stay clean while flowing enough air for the turbo to make power. Note: This filter's specifically for the 1.5T turbocharged engine. If you've got a 2.0T Accord, this isn't the right filter. Replacing the air filter's easy. Pop the hood, find the airbox on the driver's side of the engine bay, undo the clips that hold the airbox lid on, pull the old filter out, drop the new one in, close the lid, snap the clips back on. Takes maybe five minutes. Make sure the filter's seated properly in the airbox before you close it up. If it's crooked or not seated all the way, you're getting unfiltered air leaking around the filter and going straight into your engine. Check your air filter every oil change. If it looks dirty, replace it. Don't wait until you're noticing performance problems. A clogged filter robs power and fuel economy long before you feel it.
